Casting announcements for Christopher Nolan's new movie are like the years in Smash Mouth's 'All Star' — they just keep coming. After assembling an impressive ensemble for his Best Picture winner, Oppenheimer, last year, the British filmmaker is now aiming to boost the star power even further with his upcoming project. Following the recent confirmations of Tom Holland and Matt Damon as leads in his yet-untitled Universal movie, Deadline has now reported that Nolan has added two more prominent actors to the cast — Zendaya and Anne Hathaway.
The roles of Zendaya and Hathaway, as well as those of Holland and Damon, remain shrouded in mystery, much like the film's plot. Despite this, speculation about what Nolan might be planning has been rampant. It's only been a month since the inception of his new project was announced, and the rumor mill has already been buzzing with ideas ranging from a 1920s-set vampire story to an airborne homage to the 1980s cult classic Blue Thunder, and even a big-screen adaptation of The Prisoner. However, according to Deadline, sources indicate that any circulating descriptions or loglines are inaccurate, so it's best to take online rumors with a grain of salt (preferably arranged in a circle, just in case the vampire rumor turns out to be true!).
What we do know is that Nolan is directing from a script he wrote himself, with his wife, Emma Thomas, serving as a producer. The film is also said to be set outside the present day. This marks Zendaya and Tom Holland's first collaboration with Nolan, and their casting sets up an extraordinary double-release in July 2026, with this movie scheduled to hit IMAX screens on July 17, followed by Spider-Man 4 on July 24. For Damon and Hathaway, this will be their third appearance in a Nolan film, solidifying their status as part of his inner circle of collaborators (Damon previously starred in Interstellar and Oppenheimer, while Hathaway played Selina Kyle in The Dark Knight Rises and also appeared opposite Damon in Interstellar).
What this enigmatic Nolan movie will ultimately be remains to be seen. But we can expect to hear more, and more, and more casting announcements in the coming weeks and months. Long live cinema!
