During The Game Awards, Capcom unveiled Onimusha Way of the Sword, marking the first new installment in the series since 2006. The game was introduced with a cinematic trailer, confirming its release for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC in 2026. The trailer features red flames drifting through various feudal Japanese settings before being absorbed by the protagonist. It also showcases in-game combat moments, highlighting third-person action against supernatural foes such as fungus-infected samurais and colossal monsters. The end of the trailer reveals several formidable enemies, including a towering, boar-like creature.
Onimusha has traditionally been a hack-and-slash action franchise, blending historical figures with retellings of Japanese history, infused with supernatural elements. Previous games were set in the Sengoku period, but Way of the Sword will shift to the early Edo period, unfolding in Kyoto. The last mainline entry was Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams in 2006, followed only by a mobile game and a remaster.
