Another video game series is making its way to the big screen, or at least attempting to. Lionsgate has struck a deal with Red Barrels to bring the horror game series Outlast to the movies. Lionsgate, known for its work on the Saw franchise, has experience in the spooky genre. Producer Roy Lee, who has been involved in successful horror films like It and Barbarian, will be producing the Outlast movie, with J.T. Petty handling the screenplay. Petty, who has also worked on the game series, expressed excitement about the opportunity to explore the characters and killers in the Outlast universe through film.
The Outlast series first launched in 2013, with Outlast 2 following in 2017 and The Outlast Trials debuting in 2023. The games center around a journalist investigating a psychiatric hospital, leading to the expected terrifying outcomes. Lee praised Outlast for setting a new standard for immersion in horror, noting that the game's lore provides a solid foundation for a psychological and physical horror film. Red Barrels co-founder and creative director David Chateauneuf acknowledged the influence of horror movies on the franchise and expressed his excitement about collaborating with horror legends on the film adaptation.
While the deal has been announced, there is no release date or casting information available yet. In Hollywood, many projects are announced but never come to fruition, so the Outlast movie's future remains uncertain.
