Over 99 million Pokemon games have been sold exclusively for the Nintendo Switch, according to Nintendo's latest earnings report. Since the Switch's launch in 2017, a variety of Pokemon titles have been released, such as Pokken Tournament, Pokemon Quest, Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu/Let's Go Eevee, Pokemon Sword and Shield, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and Pokemon Legends: Arceus, along with older games available through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Nintendo stated that the Pokemon series has "found a new home" on the Switch, where "sales have significantly expanded" over time. The 99 million sales figure accounts for Pokemon game sales on Switch up to September 30, suggesting the franchise may already have surpassed 100 million sales.
Nintendo has provided legal support to The Pokemon Company, including filing a lawsuit against Palworld studio Pocketpair for patent infringement. Nintendo holds a minority stake in The Pokemon Company and has been a consistent partner over the years. The next Pokemon game for Switch, Pokemon Legends: Z-A, is set to release in 2025. The success of Pokemon on Switch is not alone, as The Legend of Zelda series, encompassing Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, has sold 53 million units, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe remains the best-selling Switch game with over 64 million copies sold. More than 1.3 billion games have been sold for the Switch, making it the best-selling Nintendo system ever, surpassing the Nintendo DS (948.76 million).
Looking forward, Nintendo has confirmed that it will unveil the successor to the Switch, or whatever it will be called, by April 2025. The new console will be backward compatible with Switch games, and Nintendo Switch Online will be supported across both systems.
