Overwatch 2 is set to revisit the classic 6v6 format of the original Overwatch, complete with all the original character abilities and maps, in an upcoming event dubbed Overwatch: Classic. This limited-time mode, running from November 12 to December 2, will essentially allow players to experience Overwatch 1 within the framework of Overwatch 2. The mode will feature the original roster of 21 heroes and their original abilities, along with the game's original modes and maps. Initially, there will be no hero or role limits, mirroring the gameplay at Overwatch's launch. However, after the first few days, a single hero rule per team will be enforced for the duration of Overwatch: Classic, according to Blizzard's announcement.

Blizzard describes the event as a return to the 'chaotic' gameplay of Overwatch 1, complete with match-altering abilities like Mercy's Resurrect ultimate and Symmetra's teleporters. Friendly-fire will also make a comeback, allowing heroes like D.VA and Junkrat to harm themselves with their abilities. Despite the nostalgic throwback, there are some differences between Overwatch 1 and Overwatch: Classic. Loot boxes and the original UI won't be returning, and the event will use the reworked versions of the original 12 launch maps from Overwatch 2. Players won't be able to use skins or cosmetics from the original game; heroes will be restricted to their default appearances from Overwatch 1.

Blizzard had previously hinted at testing a return to 6v6 for Overwatch 2, but Overwatch: Classic is not that test. The company also suggests that this event might not be a one-time occurrence, hinting at potential future iterations based on player feedback. This announcement aligns with a broader trend among popular shooters, such as Fortnite and Apex: Legends, which are leveraging nostalgia for their launch versions to engage players. Fortnite is reportedly bringing back its Fortnite OG mode permanently in December, while Apex: Legends introduced Launch Royale in Season 23, a limited-time mode that mirrors Overwatch: Classic.

Overwatch 2 recently launched Season 13, featuring a new PvP Halloween event and significant balance changes to heroes like Sombra and popular tanks. For those anticipating more 6v6 action, Blizzard plans to conduct 6v6 tests during Season 14, starting on December 10. The initial test will enforce a hero in each role, while a later test will explore the 'classic 2-2-2' role composition with some adjustments.
