If you're new to Path of Exile, the passive skill tree offers numerous branching paths to navigate. Depending on your chosen character class, you'll begin at a specific point on the tree. From there, you're free to follow any path you choose, adding an element of experimentation to your build. As you might anticipate, it can be challenging to commit to a single path, especially if you feel your current build is lacking in certain resistances or attributes midway through the game. This is where respeccing comes into play. If you're curious about how to respec passive skills in Path of Exile 2, there are a few steps and considerations to keep in mind, which we'll outline below.
Don't fret if you spend your initial hours in Path of Exile 2 without being able to respec passive skills; this is intentional. To unlock this feature, you'll need to access The Hooded One NPC in the main camp hub. To unlock The Hooded One, you must complete two lengthy questlines from Act 1: The Mysterious Shade and Sorrow Among Stones. Since these are part of the main storyline, you won't miss them. However, I recommend prioritizing these over side missions to unlock respeccing as quickly as possible. Once you deliver Count Lachlann's Ring to Una, The Hooded One will become available as an NPC. Interacting with them will grant you access to the Refund Passives option, which opens up the passive skill tree, allowing you to respec any previously unlocked skills, effectively recovering the skill points you spent.
In Path of Exile, respeccing required the use of Orbs of Regret, a rare item. In Path of Exile 2, respeccing is now paid for with gold. Therefore, I suggest researching builds to get a sense of what works best with each class before committing to specific paths in the passive skill tree. Of course, Path of Exile 2 thrives on experimentation, and there's enjoyment in that as well. You don't need to min-max everything, especially for your first character. At the very least, you no longer need to hunt for Orbs of Regret.
