It's never too late to reconnect. "Suits" actor Patrick J. Adams recently opened up about his relationship with former co-star Meghan Markle, who left the show in 2018. The 43-year-old actor revealed that he and the Duchess of Sussex "are not really in touch" anymore, responding to a fan's question on a Reddit thread on October 6th.
"She leads a very different life now for obvious and important reasons," Adams continued. Markle departed from "Suits" after Season 7, with her exit announced in November 2017. She went on to marry Prince Harry in May 2018. Adams and his wife, actress Troian Bellisario, were among the guests invited to the Windsor Castle wedding. In 2020, the couple stepped down as working senior royals and now reside in Montecito, California, with their children Archie, 5, and Lilibet, 3.
After launching a "Suits" podcast with co-star Sarah Rafferty, Adams mentioned that Markle reached out. "Upon hearing about the podcast, I got a lovely text, saying how excited she was for us and asking how she could help in any way," he wrote in the thread. He added, "[It was] so lovely to still have that kind of support and friendship after so many years apart."
In a subsequent podcast episode, Adams discussed Markle's audition and her successful landing of the role of Rachel Zane. Adams and Markle portrayed love interests on the show, which aired from 2011 to 2019, and even had an on-screen marriage. Before "Suits," the pair had worked together on a "terrible, terrible pilot." Adams recalled, "There was a setting up of a romantic relationship in the pilot of that particular pilot too. And then we never saw each other again. The pilot failed. It was terrible and went away. And so we had never seen each other nor spoken to each other again."
Adams, who secured the role of Mike Ross, was surprised to see Markle during one of his chemistry reads. "She was right there and she said, 'Hi.' And I went, 'Oh my God! So good to see you!'" Filming the pilot helped the pair connect during the chemistry read, which Adams believes helped Markle land the role. "And so I think just knowing each other and getting to calm down and not have those nerves of just getting to know one another really helped that chemistry read," he explained. "And it was just clear that we had an easygoing thing when we went into that room."
During the podcast episode, Adams praised Markle's acting skills, stating that she was "head and shoulders above the competition." Rafferty recently told Entertainment Weekly that the Duchess of Sussex is among many who have been invited as a guest for the podcast. "Everybody's invited, and everybody has been so supportive," Rafferty told EW on October 6th. Adams and Rafferty will be watching and recapping the drama series episode-by-episode, sharing their experiences from filming, and interviewing former cast and crew members. New episodes of "Sidebar: A Suits Watch Podcast" will be available every Tuesday on the SiriusXM app and wherever the podcast is available.
