Genoa have named former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira as their new coach, the Serie A club announced on Wednesday.

The French tactician has been without a job since his departure from French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg in July. Prior to this, he managed Premier League club Crystal Palace.

Genoa, currently teetering above the relegation zone due to a disappointing start to the season, dismissed coach Alberto Gilardino on Tuesday.

With 10 points from the first 12 games of the league campaign, Genoa find themselves in 17th place in the standings.

Vieira, 48, kicked off his managerial journey with Manchester City's under-23 team from 2013 to 2015, before taking the helm at MLS side New York City. He then spent two-and-a-half years at Ligue 1 side Nice before joining Palace.

He will be reunited with new signing Mario Balotelli, having previously coached the Italian striker for 10 matches during their time together at Nice in the 2018-19 season.
