Paul Mescal recently discussed the moment Saoirse Ronan unexpectedly silenced him and the rest of the all-male panel during a recent episode of “The Graham Norton Show.” The “Gladiator II” actor appeared on Ireland’s “The Late Late Show” on Friday night, where he was questioned about whether he had been taken aback by his “Foe” co-star’s now-famous remark.

“No, I don’t think we were surprised because, as you mentioned, you’re on a talk show and you’re just chatting,” Mescal, 28, clarified. “But I’m not surprised that the message garnered as much attention as it did because it’s incredibly significant.”

Mescal was interviewed by Norton alongside Eddie Redmayne, Denzel Washington, and Ronan on October 25. The conversation shifted to the plot of Redmayne’s latest film, where he portrays an assassin who employs his phone as a weapon. Mescal and Norton joked about the concept, with the “Normal People” actor quipping, “Who is actually going to think about that? If someone attacked me, I’m not going to think, ‘phone!’”

While the rest of the panel chuckled, Ronan interjected sharply: “That’s what girls have to think about all the time.” Her remark abruptly halted the banter, and the actress was widely praised online for delivering such a candid truth.

“I’m sure you’ve had Saoirse on the show,” Mescal told “Late Late Show” host Patrick Kielty on Friday. “And she’s quite often, if not always, the most intelligent person in the room.” According to Mescal, Ronan was “spot on” and “hit the nail on the head” during the “Graham Norton Show” moment.

Ronan herself addressed the incident last month in a Virgin Radio UK interview, admitting it wasn’t premeditated. “It’s definitely not something I had anticipated, and I didn’t necessarily aim to make a splash,” she said on “The Ryan Tubridy Show.” “But I do think there’s something telling about the society we’re in right now and how open women want to be with the men in their lives.” She added that many men and women worldwide had contacted her about that one comment, urging people to watch it in context.
