Pep Guardiola thinks Erling Haaland could join Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as one of the best forwards in football history due to his astonishing goal-scoring stats. Haaland scored three goals in Manchester City's 4-1 victory against Ipswich Town on Saturday, marking his tenth hat trick for the Premier League team.
"The numbers are astonishing," Guardiola told the media. "He can match Cristiano and Messi in terms of goals. The numbers are incredible for someone his age. He poses a huge threat, and hopefully, he'll stay with us for many years." In just two games this season, the 24-year-old Haaland has already scored four goals, setting the stage for a potential third straight Golden Boot. His total tally for the club stands at 94 goals in 101 appearances.
The powerful forward, who was sidelined for nearly two months last season due to a foot injury, enjoyed a restful summer as Norway did not qualify for Euro 2024. "I mentioned a few weeks ago that he feels better than in previous seasons," Guardiola said. "This season, without the Euros, he's had time to relax and come back strong." Last season, Haaland faced numerous challenges, particularly at the start, often feeling fatigued and dealing with minor injuries. This season, however, with the extra rest and no Euro competition, he has returned with a positive mindset.
Haaland recently expressed that he feels better than ever. "I'm not experiencing any body pain, which hasn't happened in a long time," he said. "It's fantastic—you can push yourself harder because there's nothing nagging at you mentally. I had a lengthy pre-season and thoroughly enjoyed it." Neither Kyle Walker nor Phil Foden played in Saturday's win at Etihad Stadium as they returned late to Guardiola's squad after representing England in the Euro final. Key midfielder Rodri is also not yet fully fit after sustaining an injury while playing in the final for Spain.
