Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has long expressed his desire to create an Xbox handheld device, and he recently reiterated this ambition. In an interview with Bloomberg, Spencer stated that "the expectation is that we would do something" in this space. Bloomberg reports that Microsoft is currently developing prototypes and exploring the best approach for such a device. Spencer also mentioned that any potential Xbox handheld is likely "a few years out."
For the time being, Microsoft's focus is on enhancing the Xbox mobile app to provide a superior experience on existing portable gaming devices. Looking further ahead, Spencer believes that "our team could do some real innovative work" in the dedicated handheld market.
A September 2024 report suggested that the next-generation Xbox console might support a dedicated gaming handheld. Microsoft is currently working on its next home console, promising it will deliver the "largest technical leap" in Xbox history. Unlike PlayStation and Nintendo, Microsoft has never released a dedicated portable gaming device, but that may soon change.
During the interview, Spencer also discussed Microsoft's mobile game store, which has been delayed to an unspecified future date. Previously, it was expected to launch in July of this year. Additionally, Spencer mentioned ongoing considerations for more acquisitions, though he noted that nothing is "imminent." He also did not rule out the possibility of Halo 5 coming to the PS5.
