Like many twenty-somethings, I embarked on a soul-searching gap year in Thailand after university. Phuket boasts a variety of quiet, peaceful beaches that are often overlooked by tourists. With a coastline of approximately 48km, the western side of the island is home to some of the best beaches, including Rawai and the serene Bang Tao. These spots provide a tranquil escape from the bustling tourist hubs.
Exploring the oldest part of Phuket Town, also known as Chinatown or the old town, was a highlight of my trip. The vibrant, fairytale-like streets, adorned with flowers, lanterns, and quaint balconies, are a testament to the city's rich history as a key trading point. The Sunday night market is a must-visit, and don't miss the TikTok-famous Phuketique burnt butter toast.
Thailand is renowned for its incredible cuisine, and Phuket's local dishes are a unique culinary experience. The Banyan Tree Phuket offers a breakfast buffet featuring diverse local recipes, while a Thai cooking class at Benjarong at the Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket provides an immersive experience in the flavors and stories behind Thailand's famous dishes.
Island hopping to the legendary Phi Phi Islands is a must. Just an hour's boat ride from Phuket, these islands offer world-class snorkeling and stunning landscapes. Film enthusiasts will recognize Maya Bay, the setting for Danny Boyle's 'The Beach'.
One of the most photographed locations in Phuket, Promthep Cape offers extraordinary sunset views. Perched on a cliff, this viewpoint features a fascinating shrine and a gold-topped lighthouse, providing a peaceful spot to reflect and take in the scenery.
Phuket's status as a premium golf destination might surprise you. With nine outstanding courses, including Laguna Phuket Golf Club and the Red Mountain course, golf enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy. The compulsory caddies add to the fun and excitement of the game.
For a more stereotypical Thai nightlife experience, Patong Beach's Bangla Walking Street offers a sensory overload. Lined with nightclubs, it's a cultural experience in itself, and the disco-light covered Tuk Tuks add to the fun of the evening.
Laguna Phuket, a resort complex with six hotels, offers a homey community feel. The Banyan Tree Phuket, with its all pool-villa concept, embodies luxury. For a more affordable option, the Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket offers plush villas with private rooftop pools. Pet lovers can opt for the quirky and pet-friendly Cassia Phuket.
