Earlier this month, the PlayStation 5 Pro made its long-awaited debut in stores. Despite the absence of a disc drive and a hefty $700 price tag that has left many gamers dissatisfied, Sony President Hiroki Totoki has informed investors that the mid-generation console update has not suffered from any negative sales impact.
As reported by video game journalist Genki_JPN, Totoki recently addressed Japanese investors, stating, "Regarding the pricing, there have been various opinions, but the pricing of the PS5 Pro has not had a detrimental effect, in my view." He further emphasized that, "This hardware is specifically aimed at hardcore users."
Given that the PS5 Pro has only been available for a week, it may be too early to determine whether it will be deemed a success or a failure. What is evident is that PS5 Pro consoles are readily accessible in stores, indicating that they have not sold out. Additionally, Video Games Chronicle reports that several scalpers have been forced to sell their PS5 Pros at a loss due to the lack of demand, unlike the PS5's debut in 2020. Totoki also mentioned that the PS5 Pro is not designed for the average gamer.
However, scalpers have reportedly found more success reselling the optional disc drive that can be added to the PS5 Pro. Several retailers have already exhausted their stock of the disc drive, creating an opportunity for scalpers to step in until Sony can meet the demand. This suggests that there is a demand among hardcore gamers for a PS5 Pro capable of playing discs. Whether Sony will eventually release a PS5 Pro with a built-in disc drive remains uncertain, especially as the company is reportedly negotiating PlayStation 6 manufacturing agreements.
