The presale for PlayStation's 30-anniversary collection was a whirlwind, selling out in mere minutes and driving demand to unprecedented heights. With only 12,300 units available, parts of the collection, such as controllers and PlayStation Portable, have already surfaced on eBay with exorbitant price tags. One seller even offers to personally deliver the item for $50,000, provided he gets his new car first.
Japan, however, is taking a different approach. In an effort to curb scalping and meet genuine demand, Sony has imposed strict preorder restrictions. Only those who can prove they are previous PlayStation owners and have played games for at least 30 hours over the past decade are eligible. If you've logged into a PS4 or PS5 console between February 22, 2014, and September 19, 2024, you qualify. Pre-orders are now live on the Japanese PlayStation store, accessible to those with a PlayStation Network login and a Sony account registered in Japan.
The pre-order window closes at the end of the day on October 14. If demand exceeds supply, a lottery system will be implemented to determine the next batch of buyers. The bundle is priced at 168,980 yen, approximately $1,177. The 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro boasts a design reminiscent of the original PlayStation, complete with a matching gray DualSense Edge, a DualSense controller, and a DualSense Charging Station. Additional items include a console cover for the disc drive, a vertical stand, a collectible poster from 30 possible designs, an 'original PlayStation-style cable connector housing', four PlayStation Shapes cable ties, a sticker, and a paperclip.
The PlayStation 5 Pro 30th-Anniversary collection is set to launch on November 21.
