In December 2023, a select group of Porsche engineers and seasoned drivers embarked on an ambitious mission to shatter the record for the highest altitude achieved by a vehicle. They brought along two extensively modified 911s to the foot of Ojos del Salado, the planet's tallest volcano, situated in the northern Chilean mountains. Ultimately, they reached an impressive altitude of 22,093 feet. A comprehensive documentary film has now been produced to chronicle this remarkable achievement.
Edith: Volcano Ascent captures the experiences of this team of Porsche specialists as they meticulously prepare the two 911s—affectionately dubbed Doris and Edith—for the ascent up the western ridge of the active volcano. The film takes us from the initial stages of development, featuring insights from those who worked on the cars, to the summit of the ridge, where we witness Le Mans champion Romain Dumas set a new record while driving Edith.
Motor1 readers may recall that we had the opportunity to test drive the two Altitude 911s earlier this year, following their record-setting climb. Edith, the vehicle that conquered the ridge, is equipped with an array of cutting-edge technology, including a custom steer-by-wire system aimed at minimizing steering feedback and a sophisticated suspension system initially developed for the 919 Le Mans race car.
The documentary, crafted by the creative agency Tangent Vector, will have its premiere on August 16 at 5:30 pm at the Golden State Theatre in Monterey during Car Week. If you happen to be in the area, this is an event not to be missed.
