The Predator franchise has, over the years, introduced us to a variety of heroes. From Arnie's muscular physique in the original film to Danny Glover's LA cop in the sequel, and a group of outcasts in Predators, the series has continually evolved. Most recently, Amber Midthunder's Comanche warrior Naru took center stage in Dan Trachtenberg's Prey. However, Trachtenberg has something entirely different in store for his next Predator project.

In 2025, Predator: Badlands will hit theaters, along with another secret film in the franchise that was shot simultaneously. Unlike a direct sequel to Prey, Badlands is set in the future on an alien planet. Most notably, it features a unique protagonist: the Predator itself. "The creature is front and center, leading the charge," Trachtenberg explains in an interview with Empire. "He's still formidable, but there's an emotional depth that connects with the audience. Creating a character that viewers can relate to while still being intimidating has been both challenging and thrilling." The concept arose from a desire to "discover another cinematic gem that spiritually mirrors what Prey achieved—pushing the franchise's limits and allowing us to root for a hero we seldom get to support—but in a distinct manner. This evolved into the bold idea of rooting for the Predator."

While viewers will be asked to empathize with Badlands' dreadlocked hunter, the film will also include human characters, notably Elle Fanning, who will portray multiple roles. "She faced significant challenges on this movie—dramatically, physically, and logistically," Trachtenberg hints. With a Predator as the lead and multiple Elle Fannings, fans are eagerly awaiting the release.
