Like mother, like son. Prince William has honored his late mother, Princess Diana, by visiting a homeless shelter they both volunteered at before her passing. The Prince of Wales, 42, was seen at The Passage in London on Thursday afternoon, serving meals to those in need.
Volunteer Leo Scanlon shared insights about the royal's discreet visit, telling MailOnline that William spent about an hour there and engaged with around 100 shelter visitors. "When you're homeless, you quickly fall to the fringes of society, and it's alarming how easily you can become invisible. We become part of the street scenery. You're not seen as an individual," Scanlon explained. "When someone at the pinnacle of society comes down to talk to someone at the bottom, not for a photo op, but because they genuinely care, it means a great deal."
Princess Diana introduced her eldest son to the charity when he was just 11, and he has continued to visit regularly over the years. Scanlon noted that the prince had "no airs and graces." "No one at The Passage in Westminster even addressed Prince William as 'his royal highness'; it was just 'William.'" "A bomb could have exploded in the corner, and he wouldn't have noticed. He just looked you in the eye and gave you his full attention," the volunteer remarked.
According to Scanlon, one man William served couldn't chat with him due to the afternoon rush. So, when the kitchen closed, William went out of his way to find him and give him his undivided attention. "The way Prince William spoke to all of us, especially this man, meant a lot and was so genuine," Scanlon recalled. "He wasn't doing it for a photo op to look good; he genuinely cared about what the guy had to say."
The visit occurred just a day before William joined his wife Kate Middleton and their three children—sons Prince George, 11, and Prince Louis, 6, and daughter Princess Charlotte, 9—for the fourth annual 'Together at Christmas' service on Friday, hosted by the Princess of Wales. During the event, the couple's youngest child was photographed holding a red piece of paper with a handwritten note about what he is thankful for.
