On Friday, a group of prisoners took hostages at a jail in Russia's Volgograd region, resulting in the death of at least one prison staff member, according to state media. A video on Russian social media allegedly showed two attackers, one claiming to be a Daesh fighter, who had taken over the prison in Surovikino. The video also depicted four uniformed prison officials either lying or sitting in blood.
The prison service stated that during a disciplinary commission meeting, convicts had taken the staff hostage. Efforts are underway to release the hostages, with reported casualties. The facility is a 'harsh regime' penal colony designed to accommodate up to 1,241 male inmates, as per the prison service's website.
