The concept of electric vehicles (EVs) was once merely a hopeful dream. However, with Elon Musk and Tesla spearheading the movement, the idea gained momentum, transforming it into a reality. Despite the clear benefits over traditional gasoline-powered cars, there remains a cloud of uncertainty surrounding EVs. Questions like the convenience of charging and the high costs persist. Yet, straightforward facts can help discern reality from mere speculation. A study from Argonne National Laboratory last November revealed that a mid-sized electric sedan with a 300-mile range could emit half the greenhouse gases compared to a gasoline-powered counterpart over its lifetime. Additionally, a New York Times article highlighted that while the average price of a new electric vehicle was $56,371 in June, according to Cox Automotive, compared to $48,644 for all vehicles, the cost difference could be offset by lower maintenance and fuel expenses. The Environmental Protection Agency estimated that an electric Ford F-150 Lightning costs $1,100 annually to charge, significantly less than its gasoline equivalent.

The clarity in these facts led Kevin Chalhoub to establish EV LAB, one of the region’s pioneering multi-brand electric mobility platforms, dedicated to promoting the environmental benefits of electric transportation. At 30, Kevin’s advocacy for EVs aligns with the younger generation’s heightened awareness of sustainability in the face of climate change. Raised in Dubai, he attributes his global perspective to his upbringing. “I believe I am part of a generation that values sustainability,” he states, reflecting on the ongoing climate issues since the inception of the COP when he was just a year old.

EV LAB, functioning as a marketplace for renting and leasing EVs, embodies this sustainability ethos. With global transportation emissions reaching 7.97 billion metric tonnes of CO2 in 2022, according to Statista, EVs are seen as a crucial solution. “Every kilometer driven in an electric car benefits the environment,” Kevin emphasizes. Born in Dubai and educated in civil engineering and clean energy, Kevin, a member of the renowned Chalhoub family, has witnessed Dubai’s transformation into a global hub. His passion for the city’s potential is evident, especially in his choice to launch EV LAB at the World Trade Center, symbolizing the limitless possibilities Dubai offers.

Kevin asserts that Dubai, with its advanced charging infrastructure, is well-positioned for a full electric transition. He notes the ease of installing charging stations in villas compared to apartments, and the ongoing efforts to increase charging options. Regarding the higher initial cost of EVs, Kevin stresses that EV LAB aims to educate consumers about the lower total cost of ownership, thanks to reduced after-sales and spare parts costs. EV LAB also offers a ‘Rent an EV’ service, facilitating peer-to-peer rentals through an app, catering to various consumer needs, from renting to buying second-hand or leasing EVs.

In the four years since EV LAB’s inception, the market for EVs has tripled, with significant infrastructural support in the UAE. Kevin’s dedication to sustainability is palpable, yet he remains mindful of the expectations associated with his family’s legacy. Drawing inspiration from Novak Djokovic, he embraces the pressure as a privilege, committed to promoting sustainability and empowering others.
