Motorists are advised to incorporate fire protection into their car insurance policies as summer temperatures rise, increasing the risk of vehicle fires. While it is compulsory for all car owners to insure their vehicles, the most common and affordable option is third-party liability (TPL) coverage, which only covers damages to third-party vehicles and medical expenses if they are injured. TPL does not cover damages from natural disasters or non-traffic events like floods and spontaneous combustion or fire.

"A comprehensive car insurance plan is necessary to provide full coverage for both the insured and third parties in the event of an accident. Such a policy covers almost everything, including theft, total loss of the vehicle, fire, natural disasters, and vandalism, along with additional services like engine and accessories cover," explained Neeraj Gupta, CEO of Policybazaar.ae, in an interview with Khaleej Times. He emphasized that while car owners will need to pay more, comprehensive coverage offers peace of mind and is worth adding to your insurance policy to protect your car in all scenarios. The upgrade from TPL to comprehensive insurance typically costs an extra Dh700 to Dh800 for sedans or SUVs.

Recently, Dubai Police used the social media platform X to warn motorists about the increased risk of vehicle fires during summer due to factors like high temperatures causing everyday items such as perfumes and mobile phone chargers to ignite fires. Authorities also reminded the public about the dangers of leaving flammable items like e-cigarettes, lighters, perfume, sanitation sprays, and power banks inside vehicles. Additionally, Dubai Police are offering free car inspection services until the end of August.

Road safety experts advise motorists to check their vehicles for damaged or loose wiring, monitor rapid changes in fuel or oil levels and engine temperature, and be alert to signs of burning rubber or metal, or smoke from the engine or brakes. They should also pay attention to frequent blown fuses, which indicate faulty electrical wiring, and be aware of unusual noises from the exhaust system or issues with oil caps after an oil change. It is crucial to replace worn out or loose hoses immediately.

According to RoadSafety UAE, vehicle fires are a significant issue in the UAE, especially during the hot summer months. Maintenance is crucial, as research shows that 75% of vehicle fires are caused by poor maintenance, mechanical or electrical failures or malfunctions. Collisions or overturns account for only 3% of fires but 57% of related deaths, and one-third of non-fatal vehicle fire injuries occur when people attempt to fight the fire themselves.

In the wake of heavy rains in mid-April, insurance companies have increased premiums by up to 30% since May 1. This situation has highlighted the limitations of TPL coverage, leading to a 100% increase in demand for comprehensive insurance. Gupta reiterated that comprehensive insurance not only protects against floods but also against vehicle fire-related incidents.
