Rodrigue Petitot, also known as ‘Le R’, the chairman of the RPPRAC (Rally for the Protection of Afro-Caribbean Peoples and Resources), accompanied by Aude Goussard (R), the secretary, and Gwladys Roger (L), the treasurer of the RPPRAC, arrived at a rally in Fort-de-France on October 19. The event was held on the French Caribbean island of Martinique to discuss strategies against the rising cost of living.
On Tuesday, the local government reported that protesters had set cars on fire and attacked police during a night of unrest on the island. The Martinique administration stated that seven vehicles were burned and police were assaulted with stones and Molotov cocktails from late Monday into early Tuesday. Four young individuals were arrested. The demonstrations, which began in September, have persisted despite the implementation of curfews. Recently, French overseas territories such as Martinique, Guadeloupe, and New Caledonia have experienced protests, often led by groups expressing dissatisfaction with living standards that are significantly lower than those in mainland France. Last Friday, Guadeloupe faced a complete power outage across the island.
