Todd Phillips' Joker: Folie à Deux may have struggled at the box office, but it has found an unexpected champion in a renowned director. Quentin Tarantino has voiced his support for the Joker sequel, lauding it as a bold statement against both comic book movie enthusiasts and Warner Bros., the studio behind the film. During a recent appearance on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, Tarantino revealed that he watched Folie à Deux in a nearly deserted IMAX theater and found himself uncontrollably laughing throughout.
"I thought it was genuinely amusing," Tarantino shared. "I realize I'm chuckling at moments that others might not find humorous." He went on to liken Phillips to the Joker himself, particularly for the film's extravagant budget. "The Joker essentially directed the movie," Tarantino asserts. "From the concept to the way he spent the studio's money—he's spending it as the Joker would... He's sending a clear message to the movie audience, to Hollywood, and to anyone with a stake in DC and Warner Brothers."
Tarantino also noted the influence of one of his early works, Natural Born Killers, which he penned for director Oliver Stone in 1994. "Just as the first Joker was heavily influenced by Taxi Driver, this sequel seems deeply inspired by Natural Born Killers, which I wrote," Tarantino explained. "That's the Natural Born Killers I would have envisioned. As the creator of Mickey and Mallory, I appreciated what they did with it... I admired the direction they took. The entire film felt like the fever dream of Mickey Knox."
Joker: Folie à Deux is now available on digital platforms as of October 29, with a 4K and Blu-ray release slated for December 17.
