Rachael Ray is opening up about her life at home with her husband, John Cusimano, admitting that the couple frequently engages in heated arguments, which she believes are healthy. Ray, 56, discussed her approach to conflict during the premiere episode of her new podcast, “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead,” with her first guest, Jenny Mollen.

“It’s challenging, especially for those with fiery tempers or creative, vocal personalities, to remain calm,” the renowned TV chef explained. “John and I never calm down. We often have loud, intense arguments, but I think that’s healthy. I truly do. I also don’t trust people who are too quiet.”

Ray, who will celebrate her 20th wedding anniversary with Cusimano in 2025, further elaborated on her views. “Too much quiet unsettles me. I prefer people to express their thoughts as they occur and let everything out.”

Mollen, married to “American Pie” actor Jason Biggs for 16 years, inquired about who apologizes first after their arguments. “I’m not sure we ever apologize to each other,” Ray responded. “Eventually, I might pat him on the back or he’ll kiss me on the head, and that’s the apology. It’s understood. ‘I still like your backside.’ ‘I still like your head.’ It’s in that realm.”

Ray also shared her initial impression of Cusimano, revealing she initially thought he was gay when they first met. “When we met, he had no idea what I did, and I thought he was gay,” she said. “He told me about the dinner he made the previous night, which was impressive, and that he was a lawyer. No straight guy would know what tilapia is, or make a homemade tomatillo salsa with maque choux spilling out of an avocado.”

She even tried to set him up on a blind date. “I said, ‘He’s a great guy,’ and started describing him, and he said, ‘I’m not gay,’” Ray laughed. “And I’m like, ‘Check, please!’”

This isn’t the first time Ray has shared details about her marriage. In 2022, she told People that she and her husband “balance each other.” “We have volatile personalities but are also very practical,” she shared. “That’s the lawyer side of him and the domestic side of me. We focus on what needs to be done and accomplish it through necessary work.”

Ray announced her podcast in October after raising health concerns when she appeared to slur her words while discussing a dinner party with Tony Bennett. In an Instagram video, she recounted the time the late singer slipped on her polished kitchen floor during a dinner visit, but her comments were filled with worried messages from fans. Ray never addressed the rumors.
