A fan who racially abused Real Madrid's Brazilian forward Vinicius Jr and Villarreal player Samuel Chukwueze during two matches at Mallorca last year has been found guilty and received a suspended prison sentence, according to Real Madrid's announcement on Thursday.
The perpetrator, whose identity was not disclosed in the La Liga club's statement, had his 12-month sentence suspended after submitting an apology letter to Vinicius and completing anti-discrimination training. Additionally, he was prohibited from attending stadiums for three years.
"This marks the third criminal conviction in recent months for racist insults directed at Real Madrid players," the club stated. "Real Madrid will continue its efforts to uphold the club's values and eradicate any form of racist behavior within football and sports."
The incidents involving Vinicius and Chukwueze occurred at the Son Moix stadium in Mallorca's capital, Palma, two weeks apart. During the Mallorca versus Real Madrid game, spectators were recorded calling the Brazilian player a monkey. Vinicius has been outspoken in condemning racism at football matches in Spain.
In a separate incident, a minor who racially insulted Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni in April this year has also apologized and demonstrated remorse, the club revealed. The youth has been banned from stadiums for one year, will participate in educational activities proposed by the prosecutor's office, and will pay a fine.
