Rains impacted certain areas along the UAE's eastern coast on Sunday afternoon, with waterfalls cascading through the mountains of Fujairah. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) issued yellow and orange alerts for convective cloud formation linked to rainfall, with the alerts in effect until 7:30 PM today.
Earlier in the day, the weather department had predicted that rain might occur in the eastern and northern regions of the country this afternoon. In a video shared by Storm Centre, the roads in Dibba, Fujairah, were nearly obscured by the heavy rain. Watch the video below:
In some areas, Fujairah's skies were depicted as cloudy with intermittent rain. Watch the video below: These rains in Fujairah led to the formation of waterfalls in the mountainous areas of Dibba. Watch the video here as shared by Storm Centre:
While some parts of the country are experiencing rain today, the weather will be humid at night and on Monday morning in certain coastal and inland areas. Humidity levels are anticipated to reach up to 90% in coastal regions and as low as 15% in mountainous areas.
These rainy conditions are expected as the UAE's rainy 'Al Wasmi' season begins in mid-October and lasts until December 6. This marks the onset of colder months, heralding the first signs of winter. According to the weather forecast, these rainy conditions will persist for the next few days, with more frequent rain showers in the eastern areas.
The weather forecast also noted that these rains in the eastern parts of the country are typical for this time of year. While the rainy conditions will continue for the next few days, they are expected to diminish by Tuesday. The wind patterns in the Arabian Sea, which usually rotate clockwise during summer and bring monsoon rains to India's west coast, are now transitioning before fully shifting to an anticlockwise flow.
This shift signifies the end of the monsoon season and the potential start of winter rains for regions like Somalia in the Horn of Africa. During this change in wind direction, smaller systems like tropical depressions can form. One such low-pressure system, located south of the Arabian Sea near India's western coast, is expected to move towards the central Arabian Sea and intensify on October 14 and 15.
Another tropical depression is forecast to travel along Oman's coast towards Yemen. Although it won't directly affect the UAE, Oman will experience heavy rain on Tuesday, with some lighter showers possibly reaching the UAE by Wednesday. The weather forecast also stated that, aside from possible brief rain showers around Al Ain, there will likely be fewer showers in the UAE's eastern areas compared to previous days, as the winds are being drawn more into Oman.
