The topic of AI is already influencing various industries, including video games. While the future of game development remains uncertain, Remedy—the developer behind Alan Wake 2 and Control—has clarified its stance on AI, revealing that the company has been utilizing it for years.
"AI is a very broad topic," said chief technology officer Mika Vehkala during Remedy's recent financial presentation. "Remedy has been using various AI models and techniques even before the recent surge in interest. We are continuously collaborating with our partners to explore opportunities that AI can offer. We are currently using some of these tools that are more popular and meet our needs."
Vehkala and chief product officer Markus Mäki emphasized that Remedy is not using AI to replace creative jobs or actors. Instead, the company is leveraging the technology to handle the "mundane" aspects of game development, such as tracking movements through motion-capture performances. Vehkala also revealed that Remedy has a dedicated individual at the company tasked with monitoring emerging technologies. However, he added that Remedy is not rushing into adopting AI.
In October, Remedy showcased the first look at FBC: Firebreak, the upcoming spin-off from Control slated for release in 2025. Alan Wake 2's DLC recently teased Control 2, although the latter does not yet have a release window. These are not the only titles among Remedy's future games that could be impacted by the company's use of AI.
