Reviving vintage car designs with a modern twist isn’t a novel concept. Automakers, much like the general public, have a deep affection for nostalgia, occasionally resulting in stunning restomod concepts that we wish were tangible. The Renault R17 is one such vehicle. Unveiled today, it embraces the essence of an iconic design, integrates an electric powertrain, and presents a captivating reinterpretation of the classic 1970s aesthetic.
Renault partnered with French designer Ora Ïto for this project, which features a carbon body and remarkably balanced proportions. Drawing inspiration from the Renault 17, a hatchback that was in production from 1971 to 1979, the car incorporates rectangular LED headlights that seamlessly blend into the front fascia. The straightforward, full-width LED taillight bar complements the car’s clean lines. The R17’s flared fenders enhance its stance, giving it a more dynamic look than its predecessor, and the discreet louvers add a touch of elegance.
Inside, Ora Ïto utilized materials and fabrics from the 1970s to craft a modern interior that cleverly conceals screens within its design. Four rectangular displays are positioned behind a similarly shaped steering wheel, while the central display is horizontally mounted below the dashboard, reminiscent of a vintage radio. Despite boasting a 270-horsepower electric motor and a range of 249 miles on a single charge, Renault has no intention of bringing this concept to production. This vehicle will remain a unique creation, showcased at various upcoming events, including the 2024 Paris Motor Show in October. However, if Hyundai can reconsider its stance on the N Vision 74, perhaps Renault might do the same.
