The Audi A2 was a unique vehicle when it debuted 25 years ago. It boasted short overhangs, a high roof, and an aluminum body. However, this five-door hatchback only graced the market for approximately five years. A group of Audi apprentices has now breathed new life into this quirky hatchback by transforming it into an electric vehicle.
Audi has not disclosed specifics about the A2 E-Tron's powertrain, as this is merely a one-off project. Nevertheless, it's evident that the team has implemented several exterior modifications. The A2 now sports illuminated badges akin to the E-Tron models currently available, along with new front and rear fascias, a revised grille, upgraded headlights and taillights, streamlined door handles, and a relocated license plate.
The A2 was initially introduced 25 years ago with a range of small gasoline and diesel engines. Its most distinctive feature was its aluminum body, which was quite innovative at the time. Unfortunately, these futuristic panels failed to captivate consumers, leading to difficulties in selling the model. Production continued until the 2005 model year when Audi decided to discontinue the A2.
The A2 name lay dormant until Audi hinted at a revival at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, unveiling a compact and appealing electric concept. However, it never made it to production. Audi introduced the super-compact A1 in 2010, positioning it below the A3 in their lineup and leaving little space for the A2. If the A2 were ever to return to production, we hope it would resemble this modernized version.
