After a span of nearly 25 years, Ridley Scott is returning to the world of Gladiator, his sole film to date that earned the Oscar for Best Picture. In just a few weeks, Scott will unveil the next installment with Gladiator 2. Recently, Scott hinted that he has already begun working on Gladiator 3, though the sequel is not yet confirmed.

"People ask, 'Do you have [a third film]?" Scott told EW. "And I respond, 'Naturally.' That's the immediate reaction. But have we actually started? Not really. Even while I was working on Gladiator 2, I was considering who might survive. It's more compelling if there's a survivor."

Scott's earlier remarks about the potential sequel strongly suggested that his new protagonist, Lucius Verus, portrayed by Paul Mescal, will endure the events of the film, unlike his predecessor. However, Mescal reveals that he and Scott have not yet discussed any sequel plans.

"No, that's entirely Ridley's domain," Mescal said when queried about a possible Gladiator 3 by EW. "It's his project. But any plans he has, I'd be thrilled about. Honestly, I haven't heard much from him regarding it, so I'm curious."

Should Gladiator 3 proceed, Lucius would serve as the character tying the three films together. Spencer Treat Clark played Lucius as a child in the original Gladiator, alongside Russell Crowe's Maximus. Their bond has been highlighted in one of the latest trailers, confirming a long-standing theory about their relationship.

Gladiator 2 is set to debut in theaters on November 22.
