We've witnessed numerous classic cars in various states of disrepair go under the hammer, but this upcoming auction might just take the cake. In October, RM Sotheby's is set to auction off the Rudi Klein Collection, arguably the most remarkable automotive salvage yard in the world. This collection has not been entirely under wraps, yet few have had the chance to explore its depths in Los Angeles. Technically classified as a junkyard, Rudi Klein, who emigrated to the US in the 1950s, initially established a scrapyard specializing in European cars. Over time, his business flourished, leading to an impressive accumulation of salvageable parts cars and the financial means to acquire some high-end models. Klein passed away in 2001, leaving his family to maintain the site as is, essentially preserving the collection untouched. Among the towering piles of Porsche 356s, several Lamborghini Miuras, and extensive rows of car parts, one can find rare Mercedes 300 SLs and unique vehicles, including a pre-war Mercedes-Benz. Although RM Sotheby's has yet to release comprehensive details, the initial glimpses are nothing short of astonishing.
Among the highlights is a one-off pre-war Mercedes-Benz, hailed by RM Sotheby's as one of the most renowned pre-war models. This particular car is one of the 29 alloy Gullwings produced, uniquely painted black. Another standout is an early roadster featuring a red exterior paired with a cream interior, originally equipped with Rudge-wheels. RM Sotheby's notes that this is the sole surviving 855 model, having graced museums and enjoyed a stint as a glamorous show car in Hollywood during the 1950s. Additionally, the collection boasts the only known Grifo convertible ever made. Among the Porsche 356s documented, one is believed to have only 600 miles on its odometer.
Cary Ahl, a car specialist at RM Sotheby's, expressed excitement about the discovery of rarities like the Mercedes 500K and the Alloy Gullwing, stating, "What Klein has gathered here is truly unique, and we anticipate that many of these cars will continue to inspire and be preserved for generations to come. It's an unparalleled opportunity for collectors, and the potential is limitless with this collection."
