British singer-songwriter Robbie Williams' tumultuous life journey has been the muse for the musical film Better Man, where the pop icon is depicted as a CGI monkey. This semi-autobiographical drama chronicles Williams' path from his early years to international fame.
The film, which features some of Williams' most iconic hits like Angels and Rock DJ, sees the artist himself lending his voice to the main character. At the London premiere of Better Man on Wednesday, Williams, who was also the focus of a Netflix documentary last year, expressed how natural it felt to share his story.
"I never cease to open up about my past. It's my way of socializing. You share your childhood trauma, I share mine, and we connect. It's just part of my routine," said Williams, who celebrated his 50th birthday in February.
"Music and entertainment have healing properties. I hope this film contributes to that healing process for some. I know it sounds ambitious, and some might roll their eyes, but I genuinely mean it."
Better Man delves into the teenage Williams' entry into the 90s boy band Take That, his struggles with substance abuse, and the differing perspectives that led to his departure from the group and the launch of his solo career, marred by depression and addiction.
The film also explores the ups and downs of his relationship with All Saints singer Nicole Appleton and the conflicts with Take That's Gary Barlow and Oasis's Liam and Noel Gallagher.
Directed and co-written by The Greatest Showman filmmaker Michael Gracey, Better Man emerged from a series of casual interviews in Williams' recording studio, initially not intended for a movie. The unique approach of using a CGI monkey to represent Williams came naturally to Gracey.
The CGI monkey version of Williams is portrayed by actor Jonno Davies, who wore a performance capture suit during filming. "For someone who views themselves as a performing monkey, it made perfect sense," Gracey explained. "I believe you see more of Robbie in the monkey. The monkey elicits more empathy, and it makes the storytelling very compelling."
Williams, who recently released a new song from the film's soundtrack titled Forbidden Road and is set to embark on a UK and European tour in 2025, hinted at more new music on the horizon.
"New music is on its way, depending on how well this film performs. If it does exceptionally well, it will come sooner; if not, it will come later."
Better Man starts its worldwide cinematic release on December 25.
