If you're looking to watch a Robert Zemeckis film featuring Tom Hanks and covering a substantial period, your choices are currently limited to a few titles, with Forrest Gump being the most prominent, and possibly Cast Away as well. Prepare to welcome a third film to this exclusive list: Here. Adapted from Richard McGuire's graphic novel, Zemeckis' latest project introduces a distinctive narrative technique: the entire film unfolds from a single, unchanging camera angle. Within this fixed frame, characters and settings evolve, allowing viewers to witness the passage of time through the same room, including glimpses of the land before a house was constructed there. This unique approach showcases characters aging and changing, with the room's furnishings coming and going, offering a comprehensive exploration of life's various facets.
Specifically, the film stars Tom Hanks as Richard and Robin Wright as Margaret, marking a long-anticipated reunion for the trio of Hanks, Wright, and Zemeckis, who previously collaborated on Forrest Gump. “When Tom agreed to join the project, the first thing I said to him was, ‘We need to ask Robin if she wants to play Margaret,’” Zemeckis shared with Empire. “He responded, ‘That would be fantastic.’ Their on-screen chemistry is truly magical.” Fortunately, Wright accepted the role.
Filming an entire movie from a single camera angle presented numerous technical hurdles, but it also provided a unique platform for Hanks and Wright to deliver the kind of emotional depth that only they can. “When you have actors with such chemistry sharing the same frame, it creates an intimate and powerful experience,” Zemeckis explains. “The timing of their performances feels completely authentic. There's no artificial storytelling imposed on their work.” Here's hoping Here captures some of the magic that made Forrest Gump unforgettable – so bring your own box of chocolates.
