The Rockford Peaches reuniting? Some might call that a grand slam. The stars of the 1992 film “A League of Their Own,” including Geena Davis, Lori Petty, and Rosie O’Donnell, had a mini reunion at Chicago’s Donald Stephens Convention Center for the Chicago Sports Spectacular on Sunday. The trio spent the day signing memorabilia and taking photos with fans of the movie.
The much-loved Penny Marshall-directed sports comedy was based on the true story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. Davis, 68, and Petty, 61, played sisters Dottie Hinson and Kit Keller, respectively, while O’Donnell, 62, starred as third base player Doris Murphy. Other cast members at the event included Bitty Schram, Megan Cavanagh, Tracy Reiner, Anne Ramsay, Freddie Simpson, Patti Pelton, Connie Pounds-Taylor, and Kelli Simpkins. Notably absent were Tom Hanks, who played the Peaches’ coach Jimmy Dugan, and Madonna, who portrayed center fielder “All the Way” Mae Mordabito.
Ellie Weingardt, who appeared as the charm school instructor, also posed with the cast. O’Donnell shared a photo of the group on Instagram, with herself, Davis, and Petty in the center. She captioned it, “The rockford peaches 2024 #leagueoftheirown,” accompanied by a peach emoji. Fans were emotional, with one commenting, “I’m not crying – you’re crying! Wait – there’s no crying in baseball!” Another added, “That’s so great! This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. Our family knew all the best lines. So good to see you all together.”
In 2022, a Prime Video adaptation of the film premiered but was canceled after one season due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Despite months of negotiations, the series was axed entirely. That same year, the original cast celebrated the film’s 30th anniversary, with Davis reflecting on the project. She recalled journalists often asking if the movie was feminist, to which she would reply, “Yeah, yeah. Obviously.” Another common question was whether there was catfighting on set, to which she responded, “No, no. There’s none. We’re a team, we support each other.”
Davis noted that “A League of Their Own” was a groundbreaking film, particularly for its portrayal of athletic and successful female characters. She mentioned that Susan Sarandon pointed out the rarity of a movie where women aren’t pitted against each other. Despite the film’s success, Davis was disheartened by the industry’s continued skepticism about women’s movies, stating, “Having a successful movie with women in it didn’t change any opinion about women’s movies in Hollywood.”
