Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer expressed his views on Tuesday regarding the anti-doping authorities' handling of Jannik Sinner's case, highlighting a potential double standard. Despite two positive tests earlier this year, Sinner avoided suspension. Federer, a 20-time Grand Slam winner, described the situation involving the Italian world number one as 'a tricky situation' and 'the nightmare of every athlete'. However, he expressed his belief that Sinner did not intentionally consume the banned substance clostebol.
'It's not something we want to see in our sport. This type of news, regardless of whether he did something or not ... It's just noise that we don't want,' Federer stated during an interview with NBC show on Tuesday. He acknowledged the public's frustration regarding the consistency of Sinner's treatment compared to others.
'I think we all trust pretty much that Jannik didn't do anything, but the inconsistency potentially that he'd have to sit out while they were not 100% sure about what was going on, I think that's the question here that needs to be answered,' he said. 'But it is what it is. We have to trust the process as well of everyone involved.'
Federer is currently in New York to promote his book.
