Romancing SaGa 2's physical edition for PS5 has seen its first price drop at both Amazon and Walmart. This remastered version of the Super Famicom classic, which debuted last month with a $50 price tag, is now available for $42.31 at either retailer. While the game is also available in physical form for the Nintendo Switch, this particular discount is exclusive to the PS5 version. Technically, the Switch edition is currently on sale for 5% off at Amazon, bringing the price down to $47.49, but this hardly qualifies as a significant deal.

The PS5 deal for Romancing SaGa 2 is quite attractive given that the game was released in late October, but it's not the most compelling offer on a Square Enix RPG during Black Friday weekend. For instance, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is available for $30 off, Octopath Traveler 2 can be purchased for just $25 on both PS5 and Switch, and the Final Fantasy I-VI Collection Anniversary Edition is $20 off for Switch and PS4. Additionally, there are substantial savings on JRPGs from various studios, including Metaphor: ReFantazio, the latest IP from Atlus.

Square Enix has been steadily revitalizing the SaGa series over the past few years, with remasters, remakes, and new entries, such as SaGa Emerald Beyond, a fresh standalone addition released in April. Steam keys for SaGa Emerald Beyond and other SaGa games are currently on sale at Green Man Gaming, with most titles being cheaper for XP members. For example, SaGa Emerald Beyond is priced at $25 for members and $30 for non-members.

Originally starting as a Final Fantasy spin-off titled Final Fantasy Legend, the SaGa series soon developed into its own distinct franchise. Unlike many JRPGs from the 90s, SaGa games are known for their non-linear storylines and intricate character development systems, which are more reminiscent of 90s computer RPGs. In Romancing SaGa 2, players assume the roles of various members of a royal family, tasked with defending their empire and thwarting world-ending threats. The game also features a castle-building mechanic where players construct and manage fortresses across their kingdom. Similar to other games in the series, the choices players make regarding where to go, who to speak with, and which side quests to complete can significantly alter the story's progression. This open-ended experience, even by contemporary standards, makes the new remake an ideal opportunity to either try the game for the first time or revisit it with the aim of experiencing an entirely different narrative path.
