Indian actress, playback singer, and politician Roopa Ganguly was arrested on Thursday and taken to Kolkata Police Headquarters, Lalbazar. The Bharatiya Janata Party leader was detained after participating in a strike at Basdroni Police Station, protesting the death of a schoolboy in Basdroni. A schoolboy was killed after being struck by an excavator in Kolkata's Bansdroni.

Speaking to ANI, Ganguly claimed that those involved in the incident were close associates of the local 113-ward TMC counselor. "A tragic incident occurred early on Mahalaya. A payloader struck and killed a 14-year-old student on his way to tuition. The original driver was not at the wheel; it was a training session. Locals reported that the four boys were drunk and are close associates of the local 113-ward TMC counselor," Ganguly stated.

She further added, "The police failed to arrest them all day. I was urging the police officers to apprehend these criminals and was peacefully protesting by sitting at the Bansdroni police station. For no apparent reason, the police arrested me and brought me to Lalbazar. It's unclear why they can't arrest the actual culprits on time but harass ordinary citizens."

Further details regarding the circumstances of the student's death are pending.
