The 52-metre Royal Huisman sportfisher Special One, scheduled to make its debut at this year's Monaco Yacht Show, is designed to operate on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), which, according to her designer Vripack, "reduces harmful CO2 emissions by over 90 per cent". "We implemented our most innovative naval architecture on this hull, leading to significantly lower resistance and, as a result, reduced fuel consumption," explained Bart Bouwhuis, Vripack's co-creative director. "Nevertheless, we were fully aware that the twin V20 MAN 4500kW drive train – capable of propelling this yacht to over 32 knots – and her twin Zenoro 180 kW generators would still consume a considerable amount of fuel. We had heard about this 'new fuel' and initiated our research."
This announcement comes after the delivery of Special One in June 2024. The yacht has been dubbed a "sportfisher on steroids" and was commissioned by a seasoned yachtsman and avid fisherman. "The aspirations and challenges of this project were far beyond the comfort zone of other yards," stated Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman. "Special One exemplifies our capability to develop bespoke solutions that precisely match our client's vision." Speaking more broadly about the project, Timmerman added: "It is widely known that the Royal Huisman team thrives on tackling new engineering challenges – particularly when they present themselves in the form of a distinctive project concept."
Special One is distinguished by a lengthy bow, elevated bulwarks, and a low, uncluttered fishing cockpit aft. She features an all-aluminium Alustar superstructure with a commanding profile that houses six decks, designed "for both high-end sportsfishing and luxurious living". The yacht is equipped with the latest gamefishing gear, and the tower provides a viewing platform to the dedicated fishing area aft. At night, the yacht is illuminated by laser-powered exterior lighting.
Vripack is also responsible for the yacht's interior, which remains undisclosed. Royal Huisman collaborated with Bush & Noble for sportfishing expertise and Hampshire Marine for the day-to-day technical aspects at the shipyard. "This is an extraordinary brief," Bouwhuis remarked. "And the outcome is an extraordinary boat. It boasts the authentic proportions and long, flaring bow of a classic American sportfish boat, combined with the harmonious feel of a luxurious superyacht. It’s a supersized model with super chic curves, realized on a grand scale."
This news follows the announcement that Royal Huisman is set to construct an 81-metre sailing yacht, codenamed Noir. Once delivered, she will rank among the 10 largest sailing yachts in the world. For those attending the Monaco Yacht Show, visit Stand DS103 to meet the BOAT International team.
