Royale Pagaille, a Haydock specialist who excels in the mud, maintained his dominance from the final fence to secure the Grade One Betfair Chase for the second consecutive year at the venue. The opening Grade One event of the winter season showcased the prowess of staying chasers, as Grey Dawning, possibly Britain’s top contender for the Gold Cup at Cheltenham in March, launched a seemingly winning bid at the last fence. However, Charlie Deutsch on Royale Pagaille, after being overtaken, rallied strongly and reclaimed the lead within the final furlong, crossing the finish line two lengths ahead.
“You always crave those head-to-head, thrilling finishes,” said Rich Ricci, the winning horse’s owner. “That’s what makes the sport so captivating, and this horse, though perhaps not a Gold Cup contender, gives his all and adores this course. When he was passed, I thought we’d settle for second, but to come back and win is truly remarkable.”
In Ireland, there was a slight upset in the Grade One Morgiana Hurdle as Brighterdaysahead surged ahead in the final stretch, defeating the 4-9 favorite and reigning hurdles champion, State Man. Brighterdaysahead’s odds for the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham in March were slashed to around 6-1, while State Man remains a 4-1 favorite to retain his title. Lossiemouth, who missed Saturday’s race due to a stone bruise, leads the betting at 5-2.
