Rúben Amorim is set to become the new head coach of Manchester United after finalizing a deal to join from Sporting, with his contract running until 2027. However, he will not begin his tenure until the November international break. United are paying the €10m (£8.3m) release fee for the 39-year-old and an additional €1m to reduce his 30-day notice period. Amorim will stay with Sporting for their next three matches, including the Champions League clash against Manchester City on Tuesday, before his first United game, which is scheduled for the trip to Ipswich on 24 November.
Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue as United's interim head coach for three more home games – against Chelsea on Sunday, Paok on Thursday, and Leicester on 10 November – before handing over to Amorim. The international break commences on 11 November. Amorim chose not to force an exit out of respect for Sporting, who are expected to promote João Pereira, the B team head coach, as his replacement.
It is anticipated that Amorim will bring five members of his backroom staff to United – the coaches Emanuel Ferro, Adélio Cândido, and Carlos Fernandes, goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital, and sports scientist Paulo Barreira – though the details of their compensation are yet to be finalized. United's chief executive, Omar Berrada, and sporting director, Dan Ashworth, have been in Lisbon this week to discuss the transition with Sporting.
Van Nistelrooy has expressed his willingness to remain at United after Amorim's arrival, ready to take on any role that is required.
