Russia initiated a series of missile and drone strikes against northern and eastern Ukraine during the night, resulting in at least 29 injuries, according to Ukrainian military and local officials on Sunday.

The targeted areas included the frontline regions of Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Donetsk, as reported by Ukraine's air force via the Telegram messaging app. Russia has persistently bombarded Ukrainian border regions, and Kyiv claimed that its recent unexpected incursion into Russia's Kursk region was intended to impede Moscow's capability to conduct such assaults.

The air force noted that many of the missiles failed to hit their intended targets, mentioning the deployment of an Iskander-M ballistic missile, an Iskander-K cruise missile, and six guided air missiles, without specifying how many were intercepted. A missile strike in Sumy's northern region resulted in one fatality and at least 16 injuries, including three children, according to local authorities on Telegram.

Oleh Sinehubov, the governor of the eastern Kharkiv region, reported on Telegram that at least 13 individuals were injured in the Russian attacks, among them a 4-year-old child. Ihor Terekhov, the mayor of Kharkiv city, stated that a gas pipeline was damaged, with at least two houses destroyed and 10 others damaged.

The air force also reported that Russia launched nine attack drones, with Ukraine's air defense systems successfully destroying eight of them over the Mykolaiv region. Reuters was unable to independently confirm these reports, and Russia has not yet provided a response. Both parties in the conflict deny targeting civilians, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
