Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 developer Saber Interactive is set to ban custom mods in the game's online public matches, citing a "non-negligible amount" of recent server stability issues as the reason. Starting with the next major update in December, players using mods will be unable to matchmake with others in the game's PvE Operations mode or PvP Eternal War modes. However, mods will still be permitted in private Operations lobbies, and once custom Eternal War lobbies are introduced, they will also allow mod usage.

In a statement on Steam, game director Dmitriy Grigorenko emphasized that Saber Interactive values mods and the creativity of the community, describing them as "great" and predicting they will "undoubtedly contribute to the game's longevity." Despite this, the developer needs to ensure the game functions correctly for all players. Grigorenko pointed to recent server stability problems and reports of save file corruption for non-mod users who played with mod users as the driving factors behind the policy change.

Although mods will be restricted in online public matches, Saber plans to make modding the game easier in the future by providing better access to the game's backend and releasing some of their internal tools to modders, allowing for more streamlined development. Space Marine 2 has been a significant success for Saber, surpassing 4 million copies sold. A recent update introduced a new difficulty option and mission to the Operation mode, alongside some poorly received balance changes, many of which were reverted due to community feedback.

For those curious about the continuation of Space Marine 2's single-player campaign, an upcoming episode of the Amazon Prime anthology series Secret Level will pick up the story.
