On Wednesday, Fifa officially announced that Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 World Cup. The decision was made through a vote during a virtual Fifa Congress. For the 2034 edition, Fifa applied its principle of rotating the tournament between continents, limiting bids to Asia and Oceania. The 2026 World Cup, which will be the first to feature 48 teams, is set to take place in North America. Saudi Arabia was the only candidate, paving the way for the World Cup to return to the Gulf region shortly after Qatar hosted the event in 2022. The country already hosts several major events, including a Formula One Grand Prix, heavyweight boxing matches, the LIV golf circuit funded by Saudi's sovereign wealth fund, and the WTA Finals tennis tournament.
