Saudi Arabia announced on Sunday its intention to construct a 92,000-seat stadium in Riyadh capable of hosting significant international competitions, as the kingdom appears poised to secure the hosting rights for the 2034 World Cup. The Saudi sports ministry presented the approved design for the stadium, which is slated for completion in the fourth quarter of 2029, as reported by the state news agency SPA. The stadium will function as the primary home for the Saudi national team and will be integrated into a sports complex that includes an indoor sports hall, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and additional amenities. It will bear the name of Saudi King Salman.
"This design was selected from multiple proposals by six international firms, guaranteeing compliance with FIFA's requirements and standards for sustainability and architectural quality," SPA stated. In March, Saudi Arabia initiated its campaign to host the 2034 World Cup. The bid is highly likely to be successful due to the lack of competing interests expressed before FIFA's deadline at the end of last year.
