Saudia Group has entered into an agreement with Lilium to acquire 100 all-electric flying shuttles, according to the Germany-based air taxi developer. This marks one of the largest orders for the company as it continues to advance its aircraft development. The Saudi state-owned airline has confirmed an order for 50 of Lilium's electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) Jets, with an option to purchase an additional 50 in the future. The initial aircraft are slated to be integrated into Saudia's fleet by 2026. The signing of the agreement occurred at Lilium's headquarters near Munich during a visit by Saudia executives to Germany; however, the financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
Lilium has experienced setbacks due to delays in the delivery of testing equipment and other components, which has resulted in the postponement of the first manned flight of its vertical take-off aircraft to early next year. The company is vying in a competitive eVTOL market, aiming to supplant road travel or short flights by aircraft or helicopters. Saudia plans to utilize the air shuttles for transporting pilgrims between Mecca and Jeddah, and for conveying guests to significant sporting events in Riyadh and various tourist attractions.
