Last year at The Game Awards, Sega unveiled new entries in several of its iconic franchises, including Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, and Streets Of Rage. Recently, an executive from the company confirmed that another beloved Sega series is making a comeback, as a new Virtua Fighter is currently in development.
In an interview with VGC, Justin Scarpone, Executive VP and Head of Sega's Global Transmedia Group, confirmed the development of a new Virtua Fighter alongside other classic Sega franchises previously announced. No additional details were provided about the upcoming project or whether it will be part of a broader transmedia strategy, similar to Shinobi, which has both a game and a movie in the works.
"We have a range of titles in development that fall into the legacy category, which we announced last year at The Game Awards," Scarpone stated. "Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and now we have another Virtua Fighter in the works. It's all very exciting."
If the new game is not a reboot or remake, it would mark the sixth entry in the Virtua Fighter series, which revolutionized the fighting game genre with its 3D gameplay when it debuted in 1993. The most recent installment, Virtua Fighter 5, initially launched for home consoles in 2007 and was remastered in 2021.
Sega's transmedia strategy gained momentum with the successful release of the Sonic The Hedgehog movie in 2020, followed by the upcoming third film in the series. Other notable Sega projects include the Yakuza: Like A Dragon series on Amazon Prime Video, Sonic X Shadow Generations on consoles and PC, and Metaphor: ReFantazio from Atlus.
