Selena Gomez, frequently criticized for her fluctuating appearance and weight, is tired of the rumors suggesting she has undergone cosmetic surgery. The 32-year-old singer addressed these rumors in the comments of a TikTok video discussing her changing looks. The video, since deleted, featured content creator Marissa Barrionuevo, a physician assistant at a plastic surgery office, who was asked by Page Six to comment on any cosmetic work Gomez might have had. Barrionuevo refused to analyze Gomez's appearance, citing her health battles with lupus as a reason. In the 2023 video, Barrionuevo explained to viewers that lupus can alter a person's appearance and should not be confused with cosmetic procedures. However, Gomez responded on July 27, stating, "Honestly, I hate this. I was on stripes because of flare up. I have Botox. That's it. Leave me alone." Following Gomez's comment, Barrionuevo pinned it to the top of a new video and apologized, writing, "I adore you. I really do mean the best, so I apologise if this rubbed you the wrong way in any way whatsoever." She added, "You don't owe it to anyone to tell us why you don't look the same as what you did when you were a teenager or in your 20s." Gomez replied, "I love you. Not about you. I just get sad sometimes." In 2014, Gomez was diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disorder that affects tissues and organs, leading to a kidney transplant in 2017. In January 2023, Gomez addressed fan concerns about her health after posting a skincare routine on TikTok where her shaking hands sparked trolling. She clarified, "I shake because of my medication for lupus," and noted, "Also read my disclaimer. I ain't no pro," as reported by E News. Gomez has consistently advocated for body positivity amidst years of scrutiny about her appearance, sharing on her Instagram Stories in January, "Today I realised I'll never look like this again. I'm not perfect but I am proud to be who I am--sometimes I forget it's ok to be me."
