Singer and actor Selena Gomez revealed how writer-director Jacques Audiard's unconventional approach helped her secure the role of Jessi Del Monte, a cartel leader's wife in 'Emilia Perez,' as reported by People.

"I had no idea what he was aiming for... 'Act drunk and throw your shoes if you want... just go wild.' And I was like, 'Oh? OK,'" Selena recounted about Audiard's direction. For her audition, she performed the pivotal sequence, a musical number titled 'Bienvenida.'

"I did it once, and Audiard said, 'Go wilder.' So I went all out. I was standing on furniture, and I blacked out, but I was just singing my heart out and dancing like a madwoman – it was a wild experience," the actress shared.

"I was honored when he chose me for the role," she added. France has selected Jacques Audiard's groundbreaking crime musical, 'Emilia Perez,' as its contender for the Best International Feature category at the 2025 Academy Awards. The film boasts a stellar cast, including Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, and Spanish actress Karla Sofia Gascon.

The genre-blending film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it received critical acclaim, winning the Jury Prize and a shared Best Actress award for its ensemble cast. Gomez also mentioned whether she provided any vocal coaching to her co-stars.

"They didn't need it. First off, have you seen Zoe? She doesn't need any tips. If anything, I need the tips," she joked. 'Emilia Perez' is set to release on Netflix on November 13, according to People.
