In a dramatic finale, Sergio Garcia and his Fireballs GC team emerged victorious in a double playoff, clinching the 54-hole $25 million LIV Golf Andalucia at Real Club Valderrama, Spain. Entering the final day, Anirban Lahiri and his Crushers GC team seemed poised to triumph on the challenging tree-lined course. However, the outcome was unexpected. Lahiri began the final round with a four-shot lead and appeared set to claim the top prize with a remarkable birdie on hole 17. He stood on the 18th tee with a one-shot advantage in the shotgun start, needing a par on the week's toughest hole. Lahiri found the green's center with his approach and left his birdie attempt three feet away, setting up a potential winning par. Yet, with a chance to secure both the individual and team titles for the Crushers, he missed the putt, finishing with a 73 and dropping to 5 under, necessitating the double playoff. Garcia secured the individual title on the second playoff hole, again on hole 18 with a par. It was a heartbreak for the Crushers, who had won twice this season and led the season-long points standings, aiming to repeat as Team Champions. "It's disappointing. Losing is never enjoyable," said DeChambeau. "That's what makes winning so much sweeter. I sympathize with Baan (Lahiri)." Abraham Ancer and David Puig defeated the Crushers' duo of captain Bryson DeChambeau and Paul Casey in the team aggregate-score playoff, with the Fireballs featuring three Spaniards on their roster. "To be completely honest, there's a connection between Valderrama and myself that I can't even explain," said the 44-year-old Garcia, who ended a four-year winless streak while claiming his 37th professional title. Valderrama once again presented the toughest challenge of the LIV Golf season so far, with only nine players finishing under par over the 54 holes. The Crushers continue to lead the Team Standings, with Legion XIII and Torque CG in second and third places respectively. In the Individual Standings, Garcia rises to third and Lahiri to 16th. They are headed by Joaquin Niemann (Torque), followed by Jon Rahm (Legion XIII), still in search of his first individual victory. The next LIV Golf event will be held at JCB Golf and Country Club in the United Kingdom from 26th to 28th July 2024.
