Tucked away in the vibrant heart of DIFC, Shanghai Me seamlessly marries East Asian culinary heritage with the sophistication of Art Deco, providing a sophisticated yet tranquil retreat from the bustling city. Crafted by the renowned architect Michele Bönan, the restaurant is a feast for both the palate and the eyes. The opulent interiors, featuring velvet scarlet tones, intimate lighting, and lush foliage, transport you to the glamour of 1920s Shanghai.
The evening commenced with a whimsical tribute to the Chinese zodiac as we delved into the beverage menu. Your zodiac sign dictates a bespoke mocktail — I was paired with the 'Dragon,' which lived up to its name. For starters, the yellowtail carpaccio with black truffle was a standout, with its delicate fish slices enhanced by the earthy truffle, setting a high bar for the courses to follow. The kunafa shrimp maki was another highlight, a harmonious blend of robust flavors encased in crispy delight.
Moving on to the mains, the chicken kung pao with cashew nuts delivered a satisfying mix of textures and tastes, but the pièce de résistance was the Shanghai-style braised beef short ribs. Succulent, tender, and intensely flavorful, this dish was a true triumph, leaving a lasting impression long after the meal concluded. The experience culminated with a colossal fortune cookie that proclaimed: 'Real gold fears no fire.' It felt like an apt metaphor for the evening — bold, opulent, and unforgettable.
To make this month particularly special, Shanghai Me is presenting a PINKtober menu from October 20th to 27th, in support of breast cancer awareness through the Pink Caravan initiative. A wonderful opportunity to dine with a purpose while indulging in exquisite flavors.
