On Sunday, October 13, it was announced that Sharjah has initiated two significant irrigation projects aimed at enhancing the availability of irrigation water for green spaces across the emirate.
The first project involves the expansion of the Al Qarain pumping station, boosting its daily output from 30,000 cubic metres to 100,000 cubic metres. This expansion is designed to cater to the escalating water needs driven by Sharjah's urban growth and to improve water supply for pivotal projects within the emirate.
The second project entails the construction of a new pumping station in the Al-Budaiya area, with a daily capacity of 36,000 cubic metres or 9.5 million gallons of treated irrigation water, as stated by Khalifa bin Hadda Al Suwaidi, Director of Technical Services at Sharjah City Municipality. Additionally, a new pipeline extending 22.5km from the Al-Budaiya station to the Al-Musnad area has been installed, featuring a storage unit with a capacity of 2,000 cubic metres and high-efficiency pumps for reliable water distribution.
According to Obaid Saeed Al Tunaiji, Director-General of Sharjah Municipality, these water pumping stations are crucial for supplying irrigation water to both current and future cultivation zones, as per the municipality's annual agricultural plans. These initiatives are geared towards establishing a consistent and sustainable irrigation source to bolster green spaces and agricultural endeavors.
Khalifa bin Hadda Al Suwaidi confirmed the successful completion of both projects by the municipality's technical team, noting their execution with high efficiency and adherence to the best standards, all within a remarkable five-month timeframe. The projects were also completed at a cost lower than initially projected.
Jaafar Ali Jaafar, Director of the Sanitation Department, emphasized the importance of these projects, which focused on improving the efficiency of the Al Qarain and Al-Budaiya irrigation water pumping stations. These efforts were realized through collaboration with several key organizations, including the General Directorate of the Amiri Guard, the General Command of Sharjah Police, the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority, the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority, the Sharjah National Oil Corporation, and the Planning and Survey Department.
Obaid Saeed Al Tunaiji, along with directors and officials from the municipality and collaborating agencies, attended the inauguration of the two projects to oversee their successful implementation.
